Empowering communities through sport: Defy partners with Vhembe Stars Academy

At Defy, we believe in empowering communities and creating a brighter tomorrow. That is why we are proud to partner with Vhembe Stars Academy, a Beitbridge-based football academy using sport to create positive opportunities for young people.

Established in 2023, Vhembe Stars Academy was created with a clear purpose: to provide young people with a safe, structured environment through football while encouraging them to remain engaged in school. Today, the academy supports players across age groups from Under 10 through to Under 23 and competes in both ZIFA CRSL Division 1 and ZIFA Mat South Division 2.

Football with a purpose

For Vhembe Stars Academy, football is about more than what happens on match day. The academy was founded to help give boys and girls in the community a constructive place to spend their time, develop their abilities and stay connected to education.
Its work is rooted in a simple idea: when young people have access to sport, structure and a team environment, they have more opportunities to focus their energy in a positive direction. That community focus is what makes the partnership meaningful for Defy.

Creating a pathway for young players

Vhembe Stars Academy works with players across Under 10, Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, Under 19 and Under 23 levels, creating a pathway for young footballers to develop as they grow.
Education remains an important part of the academy's approach. Many of its players are still at school, including learners attending boarding schools. When match days fall during the school term, the club works with schools to request the release of eligible players, helping young footballers balance their sporting commitments with their studies.

Building momentum on the pitch

The academy is already building a strong record of achievement. Its Under 19 side has competed in Division 2 for three seasons, winning the Heroes Cup in 2025 and finishing third in the league.
The academy's influence can also be seen in school football. In 2025, Zezani High School was crowned NASH Under 17 champion, with nine Vhembe Stars Academy players forming part of the team.
The 2026 season marks another important step, with Vhembe Stars Academy entering its first season in Division 1 while continuing its Division 2 programme.

Standing alongside Vhembe Stars Academy

Through our sponsorship, Defy is proud to stand alongside Vhembe Stars Academy as it continues to build opportunities through football. The Defy name now appears on the team's playing kit, but the value of the partnership goes beyond visibility on the field.
It is an opportunity to support an organisation that is already doing meaningful work in its community, creating a positive environment for young people and giving emerging football talent a platform to develop.

Looking ahead

With the 2026 season underway and matches played from Dulibadzimu Stadium and Ronnies Arena, Vhembe Stars Academy is continuing to grow both its competitive ambitions and its role in the Beitbridge community.
We look forward to following the academy's journey and celebrating the players, coaches and supporters who continue to move it forward.
